The Department of Physics proposes to appoint an Associate Professor or Professor in Non-Accelerator Particle Physics with effect from June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Lincoln College, under arrangements described in the job description. The combined University and College salary will be in the range £48,114 - £64,605 p.a. plus substantial additional benefits including a College housing allowance of £9,704 p.a., access to housing loan scheme, tutor’s allowance of £5,660 p.a. and private healthcare scheme. An allowance of £2,804 p.a. would be payable upon award of Full Professor title. Full Professors also have access to further merit-based pay awards.

The Associate Professor will join a vigorous community of particle physicists addressing the most significant issues in our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature in and beyond the Standard Model. These challenges include the nature of dark matter, the cosmological constant problem and ‘dark energy’, the origin of the generations, and the stability of mass hierarchies. The purpose of this appointment is to recruit a non-accelerator experimental particle physicist who would join the LUX-ZEPLIN or SNO+ experiments in the first instance. The successful candidate would also be expected engage with the development of advanced dark matter or neutrino-less double beta detection techniques that go well beyond the current LUX-ZEPLIN or SNO+ programmes, this includes the application of quantum sensing to search for light dark matter. The postholder will work closely with other particle theorists and experimentalists in the department who are involved in many of the leading experimental collaborations.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in experimental particle physics, or a related subject, and will have a proven record of high-quality creative research in non-accelerator particle/astroparticle physics at an international level. They will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate and graduate level. They will be expected to develop a world-leading research programme addressing the fundamental challenges in our understanding of the laws of nature, to teach at undergraduate and graduate level, and to participate in administration and governance of Lincoln College and the Physics Department.
