Professor David Hills

Professor David Hills

Professor and Tutorial Fellow in Engineering Science

Academic Profile

David Hills read Engineering Science at Oxford (St Johns'), and specialised in applied mechanics. He was a research assistant and then lecturer at what was then Trent Polytechnic, and went to University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1983.  In the following year he was elected to a Fellowship at Lincoln.  His research interests are in solid mechanics, in particular structural integrity, metal fatigue and problems involving contact between bodies.  Although his work is of general applicability in many engineering applications, much of the experimental work is now supported by Rolls-Royce plc, and he is Director of the University Technology Centre in Solid Mechanics which RR support.  He is the editor in chief of the International Journal of Solids and Structures.

David retains a strong interest in engineering education, and believes strongly in the college and  tutorial system.  He has held a number of college offices.
