Profile
I was born and brought up in London, read English at Pembroke College, Oxford, where I also wrote my DPhil. In 1979, I was elected to a Junior Research Fellowship at Lincoln; when that came to an end in 1982, I was appointed a Lecturer at University College London, staying there for 30 years, becoming a Professor, Head of the English Department, and finally Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. In 2012, I returned to Lincoln as Rector.
- Research
Most of my research has been concerned with English literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, especially Philip Sidney and Shakespeare. I have some later interests, such as Alexander Pope, Samuel Johnson and Evelyn Waugh. Much of my work has been concerned with the transmission of texts in manuscript and print, bibliography and palaeography, editorial theory and practice, and the history of books and of book collecting. I was closely involved in the creation of the Catalogue of English Literary Manuscripts 1450–1700, and have served as President of the Bibliographical Society and of the Oxford Bibliographical Society.
