I.T. Information
Here you will find information relating to I.T. at Lincoln - from the facilities available to how to connect to the College WiFi. An introductory pack is also available for download here.
Before you arrive at Oxford you should be issued with your own personal Single Sign On (SSO)/Nexus credentials - you will need these details in order to connect to any University IT systems. If you haven't received these details please contact the IT Office who will be happy to help. You will also be given a separate username and password to access the online printing system, I.T. Room computers, and the Current Students section of the website.

Getting connected - WiFi
There are two main WiFi networks: Eduroam and LincolnCollege. Eduroam is a nationwide network which is available at any University in the UK and across the world whereas LincolnCollege is, as the name suggests, restricted to College sites.
To connect to Eduroam:
- Go to https://register.it.ox.ac.uk and log in using your SSO/Nexus credentials.
- Click on the Self-Registration link on the left side of the page.
- Click on Register for a Remote Access (Eduroam Wifi) Account and set a password.
- Once the Remote Access account has activated go to https://cat.eduroam.org/ (you can connect to the OWL network to do this if necessary).
- Click on the download link at the bottom of the page and select University of Oxford as your home institution.
- Download and run the appropriate installer.
- Connect to the Eduroam network and enter your username in the form linc1234@OX.AC.UK (note the uppercase). Enter your new Eduroam password and you will be able to connect to Eduroam. This connection will work throughout Oxford.
- Android users may find it easier to download the Eduroam app from the Play Store.
To connect to LincolnCollege:
- Connect to the LincolnGateway network. You will be prompted to log in with your University SSO credentials.
- You will now be emailed a connection code. Use this code to connect to the LincolnCollege network. This code can be used for any number of devices.
If you struggle to get any devices to connect to either network the IT Office will be happy to help.
Getting connected - Wired connections
You can connect to the network with at Ethernet cable. If you don't have one, you can buy one from the I.T. Office or the Lodge for £5.
Plug in your cable and open up a web browser. You will be automatically redirected, firstly to a welcome page and then a registration screen. If the registration screen does not appear try entering http://192.168.100.1 into the browser address bar.
Fill in your details and click on the register button. Unplug the network cable for at least 60 seconds then reconnect and you will then have full network access.
Oxford-only resources
If you are connected to another network, in a public area or at home for example, you can still access all of your usual Oxford facilities by using the downloadable VPN client.
- Go to https://register.it.ox.ac.uk and log in using your SSO/Nexus credentials.
- Click on the Software link on the left side of the page.
- Click on the appropriate download link and run the installer.
Once the VPN software is installed you need to connect to vpn.ox.ac.uk and use your SSO password to connect.

I.T. Rooms
The College I.T. rooms are located in Lincoln House for undergraduates and in Bear Lane and the EPA Centre (Staircase 28) for graduates. Each has a number of general-purpose PCs along with printers. Your username for this system will be the same as your SSO. If you do not yet have an account, please contact the I.T. Office. Please note that food and drinks are not permitted in the I.T. rooms. Please don't install software on these PCs.
Printing
As well as the black and white printers in the I.T. rooms, there is also a printer in the Little Clarendon Street building, one in 56 St John’s Street, one in the Mitre, and a colour printer/scanner in the Library basement. An A4 page costs 5p per sheet in black and white, a colour page is 20p. A3 pages are double the A4 prices. For undergraduates College will underwrite the first £50 of printing costs; for graduates this will be the first £100 - anything in excess of these figures will be added to battels at the end of the year. You are responsible for keeping an eye on your printing totals; a figure on the web interface page will let you check how many pages you have printed. Paper for the printers may be collected from the College Office or Porters’ Lodge.
You can print directly to any of these printers from anywhere with a network connection. To do this, visit the web print login page and login using your Lincoln username and password.

Anti-Virus Software
You may not connect a computer to the wired or wireless network unless you have up-to-date anti-virus software. The University offers Sophos Anti-Virus entirely free for all students.
Anti-Spyware Software
This is rather different from AV software but we would still recommend installing either Spybot Search and Destroy or MalwareBytes. Both have free-to-use versions and offer added protection against spyware, trackers etc.
Operating System Patches
Please make sure your OS, whether a PC, Mac or tablet/phone, is set to download the latest security updates.
Phishing
Phishing emails are a persistent problem. The most common type will typically be trying to obtain personal information such as usernames and/or passwords or financial information such as banking details.
You can often spot fake emails as they are:
- Not sent from an Oxford email address
- Not addressed to you personally. No indication that the sender knows your SSO/userid
- Contain very vague details about the sender
- Not using an Oxford link (ox.ac.uk)
- Contain poor grammar and spelling mistakes
No reputable email will ever ask you to send your username and password. As a rule of thumb, any email addressed to ‘Dear Student’ or ‘Dear User’ can be safely ignored. If an unsolicited email comes in asking you to click an embedded link please don’t!
If you are unsure about the validity of an email, please forward it to help@lincoln.ox.ac.uk.
If you do get caught out don’t panic. Get in touch with the IT Office as soon as possible; generally you will need to change your passwords and/or run an anti-virus scan but a fast response is the best defence.

The network is regularly monitored to maintain compliance with these regulations. Any user who does not have up-to-date anti-virus software installed and who does not have their computer software suitably patched with critical updates to prevent viruses/worms may be disconnected at any time.

I.T. Office
The I.T. Office is staffed by Mike White (I.T. Manager) and Pete Good (I.T. Officer), and they are always happy to help. Their office is at the top of Staircase 4, but please contact them first by email or phone (01865 279805).
Some problems they can handle in person (virus infections, non-starting laptops, data recovery) but they may have to ask you to take things like major hardware failures for commercial repair. If you have a department-specific problem, such as a departmental account or software package, it may well be worth contacting the relevant IT people directly.
If your laptop gets wet, please follow these steps:
- Shut down the device immediately
- Unplug the device and, if possible, eject the battery
- Wipe off any excess water
- Stand the device on its side somewhere warm for a minimum of three days
- After three days, try to switch on the device. If it fails to start, contact the I.T. Office.
University I.T. Services
The University offers a wide range of I.T. services to students including:
- Free software. Note: As an Oxford student you are entitled to install Microsoft office on up to five devices absolutely free of charge.
- Free desktop backup for graduate students only
- Training courses
