Matriculation is your formal entry into the University, and the ceremony will take place in Examination Schools on Saturday 14th October 2017 (Saturday of first week). You will be given more details when you arrive and be sent lots of reminders! It is essential that you attend.
For matriculation, and your public examinations later on, you will need to wear academic dress (known as 'sub-fusc'). This means a gown, mortar board or soft cap, and your preferred option of the following:
dark suit with dark socks;
dark skirt with black tights; or
dark trousers with dark socks.
This should be worn with a white collared shirt or blouse, with either a white bow tie, black bow tie, black full-length tie, or a black ribbon. Shoes must be black, and a dark coat can be worn if required.
You will also need the gown for formal dinners and Rector's Collections. Gowns can be purchased from various outfitters in town, including Walters directly opposite the College (ethically-sourced). Other outlets are Ede and Ravenscroft, Shepherd and Woodward, The Varsity Shop, and (ethically-sourced) through the University of Oxford Shop. These can be purchased once you arrive in Oxford, but you will need them for matriculation as will every other fresher in Oxford, so don't leave it too late!
A group matriculation photograph will be taken, with copies available to buy. It is not possible for guests to attend the matriculation ceremony.
